Rome! Day 3

Our hostel is located practically across the street from the Vatican. If you google map it, the address is:
via Ottaviano 8
Rome, Italy
and you'll find that we're just a few yards away.
The bummer is that at any given time there are a zillion people around- either lost tourists trying to figure out where they are (we were in good company for the first few hours before we got a clue), or guides trying to hawk guided tours of the Vatican Museum for $40.
We see the line to get in every morning, afternoon, evening. It's generally wrapped around the block, 2 or so hours long. So, taking advantage of our location, we got up at the crack of dawn today, walked across the street and were mere minutes away from getting into one of the largest museums in the world. Score.

"I'm a mog. Half man, half dog. I'm my own best friend."
Eeek. Faces at the Vatican Museum.
Striking hilarious poses.
There was an entire room dedicated to animal sculptures.
Lobster!!!!
hahaha
This last picture was taken just outside of St. Peter's Basilica. I didn't take any photos inside because there is simply too much to photograph. It's like a place for giants. Enormous statues, pillars, words scrolled all around the top, it's just something to be absorbed. There are at least two bodies on display inside. Two popes have been preserved and sealed inside transparent boxes. Now, I'm a pretty laid back person with a decent sense of humor and a general respect for things; I'm not high strung. But seeing hundreds of people exicitedly gather around these dead guys and snapping pictures struck me as appalling. I can't think of a single reason why that would be necessary. To each their own, I suppose.

When we were through with that, we probably ate our 17th serving of pizza in three days and then defintely wandered around the city looking for cool stuff, as well as places not so saturated with tourists.

This was probably the coolest thing I saw in Rome. The angel at the top is holding a sword and looks ready to destroy someone.
We found some greenery!
Pretty cool view at sunset.
Steps up to the top of the next picture
